The AI “Savings” Everyone Is Talking About

Issue #105 - September 05, 2026

You ever see one of those AI headlines and immediately think...

“Wait... am I supposed to be using this now?”

New model.

New feature.

Huge cost savings.

Everybody talking about it.

And suddenly you feel like you're already behind.

That happened again this week.

Claw released Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1.

And one number kept showing up everywhere:

75% cost reduction.

Sounds great, right?

I thought so too.

For about five seconds.

Then I looked closer.

And that “75% cheaper” headline is a really good example of why I think we have to get better at slowing down when AI news starts flying around.

Because technically...

the headline is true.

But for most people reading it?

It probably doesn't mean what they think it means.

The 75% reduction is specifically around cached prompts.

Now if you just read that and think...

"Okay Atiba, whatever that means. Seventy-five percent cheaper still sounds pretty good."

Stay with me.

A cached prompt becomes useful when you're running essentially the same instructions over and over again in a short period of time.

We do this in some of our AI workflows.

For example, we have an agent that grades social media posts.

It might grade 30 or 40 posts within 10–15 minutes.

The instructions it uses for every post are mostly the same.

Maybe 80% stays identical.

Only the actual post being graded changes.

So instead of sending that same 80% over and over again, the system can cache it and reuse it.

That's where the savings matter.

And for that kind of workflow?

Great.

But now ask yourself something.

How often are you running almost the exact same prompt over and over again within an hour?

For most people...

not very often.

Which means that massive 75% savings number you've been seeing?

You may barely benefit from it at all.

And that's the bigger point.

This isn't really an email about Fable 5.1.

It's about the way we're learning to respond to AI.

Every week there's another headline telling you something is:

Faster.

Cheaper.

Smarter.

More powerful.

Game-changing.

And it's very easy to assume that because something is technically better...

it must be better for you.

Those aren't the same thing.

I think that distinction is becoming more important every day.

Because if you chase every new AI release, you'll spend half your time changing tools and the other half trying to figure out what you were supposed to gain from changing them.

Sometimes the right response to an AI announcement isn't:

“How fast can I start using this?”

Sometimes it's:

“Does this actually change anything about the way I work?”

That question will save you a lot of time.

Probably a lot of money too.

That's one of the habits I'm trying to build for myself as all of this moves faster.

Don't react to the headline.

Understand who the improvement is actually for.

Because a 75% cost reduction for somebody running thousands of repeated agentic tasks might be huge.

A 75% cost reduction on something you almost never use?

That's basically 75% off of nothing.

And suddenly the exciting headline isn't quite as exciting anymore.

So no...

I'm not telling you to ignore Fable 5.1.

I'm saying you probably don't need to run out and change everything because of one number in a headline.

You might want to pump the brakes first.

Understand what changed.

Then decide whether it matters to you.

That's a much healthier way to navigate AI right now.

I recorded a video of what that 75% cost reduction actually means, who it really benefits, and why most people probably shouldn’t change anything just because of the headline.

For the physicians reading this 👨‍⚕️

Inside AiM (AI & Marketing) Rounds, we've been having exactly these kinds of conversations.

What's actually useful?

What's mostly hype?

What's worth learning?

And what can you safely ignore for now?

Because doctors already have enough competing for their attention.

The last thing anyone needs is another AI headline making them feel like they're behind.
